The FSU Congress of Graduate Students (COGS) will hold an inaugural TOM Project health initiative event from 1-5 p.m. on Oct.14 at the FSU Globe and Multicultural Engagement Building (110 S. Woodward). The TOM Project is a student-led initiative in honor of FSU student Toluwani “Tom” Idowu. Tom passed away at the age of 22, in April of 2020 due to sudden cardiac arrest. Friends and family were devastated by Tom’s passing and FSU students rallied to create the TOM Project to help educate people on both the importance of heart screenings and how to help someone experiencing cardiac arrest.
The TOM Poject has grown into one of the largest FSU student-led and student-funded projects amounting at more than $200,000. These funds will cover the purchase and installation of 51 AEDs across FSU’s campus, 300 free electrocardiograms (ECG) screenings for students and training 1,500 students on how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use an automated external defibrillators (AEDs).
The October 14 event will kick off the installation of the first of 51 AEDs on campus paid for by the TOM Project. A handful of the students and those who helped establish and fundraise for the project will share short remarks then attendees are invited to enjoy free food, and students can sign up for CPR and AED training, and an ECG heart screening.
