Rising Voices of the Indian Diaspora: A New South Asian Workforce Enters American Journalism

Rising Voices of the Indian Diaspora

This message has been approved by Dr. Cynthia Green, Director of the Center for Global Engagement, for distribution to students, faculty and staff.

Dr. Radhika Parameswaran's talk is the keynote of the South Asian Media and Cultural Studies Conference and is co-sponsored by the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy’s Broad International Lecture Series and the Center for Global Engagement’s Engage Your World Intercultural Dialogue Series.

Dr. Parameswaran is the Herman B. Wells Endowed Professor at the Media School, Indiana University. She is the author of Countering Colorism: Contestations and Critiques in India’s Transnational Media Field that chronicles, classifies, and analyzes mainstream and alternative media representations challenging the legitimacy of skin color discrimination in India and the Indian diaspora.

Dr. Parameswaran is the keynote speaker for the 6th Annual South Asian Media and Cultural Studies Conference (Register for the full conference: bit.ly/SAMCS20). She will talk about Indian media professionals, a small minority of the population, whose creative and managerial labor contributes significantly to the field of U.S. journalism.

The steadily rising voice of Indian diaspora in American journalism allows this immigrant community to stitch itself more securely into the narrative fabric of the nation, thus contesting the enduring stereotype of South Asians as “perpetual foreigners.”

This event is free and open to the public. A reception with refreshments will be held from 3:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. The talk will start at 4 p.m.
