Dr. Rob Eschmann will lead a discussion on the impact of digital racism on local communities, the role of social work in addressing digital racism, strategies for digital resistance and activism and the implications for social work and community engagement. Dr. Eschmann is a writer, educator, filmmaker and scholar from Chicago. He writes on educational inequality, community violence, racism, social media and youth well-being.  He is an associate professor at the Columbia University School of Social Work and a faculty associate at the Harvard University Berkman-Klein Center for Internet and Society. His book When the Hood Comes Off: Racism and Resistance in the Digital Era (University of California Press, 2023), systematically explores the ways online communication has changed the expressions of racism, its effects on communities of color and society, and resistance to racism at individual and structural levels.

This discussion will take place from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 17.
