Thriving in Graduate School | Workshop Series for New Graduate Students

This message has been approved by Brian Wilcoxon, Graduate Student Resource Center Director, for distribution to students, faculty and staff.

Graduate school is a major transition, and we’re here to help you succeed. Join us for a series of workshops designed to help you navigate the transition, covering everything from well-being to funding to academic reading and writing. Participants who attend at least one workshop will also be invited to an in-person mixer for new graduate students on Friday, August 14.

All workshops will take place on Zoom. Register at linktr.ee/fsugsrc.

1. June 23, 24, 25. 10 AM—12 PM. Three-Day Finding Funding Workshop Series:
Day 1: Finding suitable funding opportunities.
Day 2: Funding databases and organizing awards.
Day 3: Funding organizations and planning a campaign.

2. June 29. 10 AM—11:30 AM. Graduate Fundamentals: Energy Management & Planning
Learn how to take control of your time and energy, beat burnout, and stay focused on what truly matters—all without sacrificing your well-being.

3. July 8. 10 AM—11 AM. Graduate Fundamentals: Reading in Graduate School.
This workshop provides tools and tips for effective graduate-level reading, including building vocabulary, organizing and summarizing materials, and skimming.

4. July 14. 10 AM—11 AM. Graduate Wellness: Adjusting to the University.
Join our workshop to explore the challenges of transitioning to graduate life. Gain valuable tips for both academic and personal success.

5. July 15. 10 AM—11 AM. Developing and Communicating Your Scholarly Identity.
This workshop will cover how to present your scholarly identity, including broader impacts and values, and connect that identity to funding applications.

6.  July 16. 10 AM—11 AM. Graduate Fundamentals: Facing the Blank Page
Learn how to build your own creative strategies toolkit to help you see your writing in different ways and give you options when you are ready to try something else.

7. August 14. 2 PM—4 PM. New Graduate Student MixerNote: You must participate in at least one workshop in the series to attend the mixer.
Workshop participants, join us in person at the Summer Mixer! Enjoy snacks and refreshments while meeting other new graduate students, learning about OGFA and GSRC resources, and playing fun games.

The workshops will be facilitated by the Office of Graduate Fellowships & Awards, Graduate Student Resource Center, Counseling & Psychological Services, and Reading-Writing Center.
