Telehealth Treatment Group for Survivors of Sexual Assault or Abuse
This message has been approved by Thomas Joiner, FSU Psychology Clinic director for distribution to all students, faculty and staff.
The Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) group at Florida State University Psychology Clinic is an evidenced based treatment to address trauma symptoms related to actual or threatened sexual assault or sexual abuse. CPT initially focuses on the impact of the trauma on beliefs about the self and others, then transitions to the development of adaptive thinking patterns regarding themes of trust, safety, power and control, esteem, and intimacy.
Treatment consists of 1.5 hour weekly Zoom sessions for 12 weeks. By the end of treatment participants will have an (1) improved understanding of PTSD, (2) reduced distress about memories of the trauma, (3) decreased emotional numbing (i.e., difficulty feeling feelings) and decreased avoidance of trauma reminders, (4) reduced feelings of being tense or “on edge,” (5) decreased depression, anxiety, guilt or shame, and (6) improved day-to-day functioning.
The group will be conducted by clinical psychology doctoral students at the Florida State University Psychology Clinic. Doctoral students are supervised by Dr. Therese Skubic Kemper. The group is intended for survivors of threatened or actual sexual assault with some of the following symptoms: unwanted/upsetting memories, avoidance of or efforts to avoid distressing memories, thoughts, or feelings, persistent and exaggerated negative beliefs or expectations about oneself, others, or the world, or irritability and angry outbursts.
Groups will be once per week via Zoom starting in late summer or early fall 2024.
