Evidence-Based Group Treatment for Trauma Symptoms Resulting from Sexual Assault or Abuse
The Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) group at Florida State University Psychology Clinic is an evidenced based treatment to address trauma symptoms related to actual or threatened sexual assault. CPT initially focuses on the meaning of the traumatic events and transitions into the identification of thoughts and feelings, and issues of trust, safety, power and control, esteem, and intimacy.
Treatment consists of 1.5 hour weekly telehealth sessions for 12 weeks. By the end of treatment patients will have an (1) improved understanding of PTSD, (2) reduced distress about memories of the trauma, (3) decreased emotional numbing (i.e., difficulty feeling feelings) decreased avoidance of trauma reminders, (4) reduced feelings of being tense or “on edge,” (5) decreased depression, anxiety, guilt or shame, and (6) improved day-to-day living.
The group will be conducted by clinical psychology doctoral students at the Florida State University Psychology Clinic. Doctoral students are supervised by Dr. Therese Skubic Kemper. The group is intended for survivors of threatened or actual sexual assault with some of the following symptoms: unwanted/upsetting memories, avoidance of or efforts to avoid distressing memories, thoughts, or feelings, persistent and exaggerated negative beliefs or expectations about oneself, others, or the world, or irritability and angry outbursts.
Groups will be once per week via Zoom starting in late fall 2023.
