IMPORTANT UPDATE! FSUCML Lecture Series - Dr. Sandra Brooke
Maddie Mahood, FSUCML Outreach and Education Coordinator
Dr. Matt Ogburn, our original speaker, had an urgent matter come up. However, our own Dr. Sandra Brooke has agreed to fill in and give an amazing talk on her deep sea coral research! Lectures are free and open to the public - no registration needed and refreshments are provided.
When: Thursday, December 5, 2024 at 7 pm
Title: “Deep sea corals -- rainforests in the abyss"
Description: Dr. Sandra Brooke, Research Faculty at the Florida State University Coastal and Marine Laboratory, is a marine ecologist who works on structurally complex ecosystems from estuaries to the deep sea. Brooke’s research focuses on understanding the drivers of species’ distributions and includes field surveys and observations using Scuba diving or underwater vehicles, together with in situ and laboratory experiments on physiological responses to environmental conditions. Her work also includes studies of reproductive ecology and early life histories of marine benthic invertebrates.Over the past 25 years, her research on deep sea ecosystems and anthropogenic impacts has contributed to establishing protected areas in the Gulf of Mexico, Southeastern US and Mid-Atlantic Bight. Her presentation will be an overview of deep-sea coral ecosystems; their exploration, ecology and the threats they face from human activities.
