Richard Reams Lecture

Maddie Mahood, FSUCML Outreach and Education Coordinator

Welcome in the New Year by joining us on January 18th from 7:00 - 8:00 pm for a lecture featuring Richard Reams, a retired zoo herpetologist who recently relocated to Florida's Big Bend!

Lecture Title: "Snake Diversity of Florida's Big Bend"

Description: Richard Reams is a retired zoo herpetologist who has worked at five zoos over his 32-year career. His most recent position was the Curator of Herpetology at the Albuquerque Zoo where he focused on managing a collection of over 500 reptiles and amphibians and a captive reproduction and release program for the Texas Horned Lizard (Phrynosoma cornutum). Richard has conducted several field research projects including a three-year amphibian population monitoring program in Dallas, TX, and herpetological surveys in Peru, Mexico, and Indiana.

In 2023, Richard moved to Crawfordville, Florida where his new project is passively surveying the snake populations of the Big Bend region with a focus on the declining Eastern Kingsnake (Lampropeltis getula). In this presentation, Richard will talk about the snake diversity found in the Big Bend region of Florida including their natural history, current taxonomy, reason for declines in some species, and current conservation efforts.
