FSU Coastal and Marine Laboratory Lecture Series: Dr. Joel Trexler
This message has been approved by Maddie Mahood, FSUCML outreach and education coordinator, for distribution to faculty, staff and students.
Join us from 7-8 p.m. Sept. 21 for a presentation by Joel Trexler, Ph.D., on "Lessons in restoration ecology from 30 years of research in the Everglades." Admission is FREE and refreshments are provided.
Joel Trexler has served as the director of the Coastal and Marine Laboratory at Florida State University since Nov. 2020 and is a professor in the FSU Department of Biological Science. He was a faculty member in biology at Florida International University (FIU) starting in 1991 and served as the director of Marine Science there from 2006 until moving to FSU. He earned a B.S. in Marine Science from the University of South Carolina and M.S. and Ph.D. in Biological Science from FSU. He was also an assistant professor of Marine Science at Eckerd College (1986-1989) and assistant professor of Biology at the University of Mississippi (1989-1991). Prof. Trexler's training and ongoing interests are in the fields of population and community ecology, including evolutionary ecology. His research focuses on restoration ecology, ecological monitoring to support environmental management and invasive species ecology.
The Florida Everglades is the focus of the largest and longest-running environmental restoration effort ever undertaken. Prof. Trexler first visited the Everglades in 1983 to collect fish for his dissertation and it became the primary focus of his research after joining the FIU faculty. In this presentation, he will discuss lessons learned from this engagement in the restoration of the Everglades and the ways it has influenced his approach to studying and teaching about ecological science.
