This message has been approved by Dr. Jim Pitts, Director of FSU International Programs, for distribution to faculty, staff, and students.

Join FSU International Programs and FSU Florence as we host Dr. Nancy de Grummond for this edition of the Bagnesi Live Lecture Series. Dr. De Grummond will share about “Finding the Treasure of Chianti.”

In 2015 a remarkable find appeared in the FSU excavations at Cetamura del Chianti: a tiny jug filled with 194 silver Roman coins. It dates to around 27 BCE and was probably the stash of a sailor who had fought in the historical battle of Actium, in which Mark Antony and Cleopatra were defeated by Octavian (Augustus). He was evidently given the property of the formerly Etruscan site of Cetamura.

The Treasure is the subject of two great shows at the FSU Study Center in Florence and the archaeological museum of Santa Maria della Scala at Siena. Authorities have saluted this as an extremely important contribution to our knowledge of ancient Etruscan and Roman Tuscany.
