$5 Faculty & Staff Discount: Black Violin to Perform at Ruby Diamond
This message has been approved by Michael Blachly, Director of Opening Nights at Florida State University, for distribution to faculty and staff.
If you’re the kind of person who when asked, “What kind of music do you like?” you'd say, “Oh, I listen to a little bit of everything,” Black Violin is the best show for you. The dynamic duo of Wil B. and Kev Marcus plays a little bit of everything, but all music from a violin’s perspective. Wil B. describes the pair's style as going against the grain, pushing against genres and using their concerts as a way to educate and entertain at the same time: "We mix Cardi B and Mozart. We’ll mix really cool, different stuff so two separate people from two different walks of life could enjoy the show in two different ways."
Wil B., violist, and Kev Marcus, violinist, combine their classical training and hip- hop influences to create Black Violin’s distinctive multi-genre sound often described as “classical boom.” This dynamic duo has roots in Florida—both met in high school in Broward County, and Will B. studied at Florida State University and Kev Marcus studied at Florida International University. Black Violin has shared stages with top names including Kanye West, Aerosmith and Tom Petty, and has creatively collaborated with the likes of Wu-Tang Clan, Wyclef Jean and Alicia Keys. They’ve composed music for the television series Pitch, which debuted on FOX in 2016, in addition to appearances on HBO’s Ballers, The Tonight Show, The Wendy Williams Show, The Kate TV and The Ellen Show. Black Violin’s latest studio album Take the Stairs was released on November 1, 2019 and includes singles “Showoff”, “One Step”, and “Impossible is Possible.” The record debuted at #1 on the Billboard Classical Chart, #1 on the Billboard Classical Crossover Chart, #7 on Billboard’s Top New Artists Chart, and #9 on the Billboard Hip Hop and R&B Chart. Their last album, Stereotypes, hit #1 on Billboard’s Classical Crossover chart and #4 on Billboard’s R&B Chart.
