2FA Phone Call and Text Message Options Going Away
This message has been approved by Bobby Sprinkle, ITS chief technology officer.
ITS takes great measures to ensure the security and privacy of the FSU community, which is why we implemented 2-factor authentication (2FA) for all FSU accounts last year. 2FA adds an extra layer of security to FSU accounts to prevent unauthorized access and protect personal information. Now, we are making a few changes to the 2FA process to increase security even more.
Starting in Summer 2021, all students, faculty, staff and retirees will need to use the Duo Mobile app and “Send Me a Push” or “Enter a Passcode” options to verify their identity when accessing FSU systems. The phone call and text message options will no longer be available.
FSU is committed to making the Duo Mobile app the quickest and most secure way to verify your identity. The app uses cutting-edge, end-to-end encryption that phone calls and text messages cannot offer. Duo Mobile can be used anywhere in the world, even without an internet connection or cell service. The app uses hardly any data and does not give the university any access or visibility into your phone.
For these reasons, ITS is requiring everyone at FSU to use the Duo Mobile app for 2FA.
Starting June 22, 2021, ITS will be removing the option to receive a phone call or text message to authenticate for 2FA. Anyone currently using the phone call or text message options will be transitioned to the mobile app in waves throughout Summer and Fall 2021.
To prepare, please follow the steps in the 2FA Quick Start Guide to download the Duo Mobile app and enroll a mobile device for 2FA.
If you do not have a smartphone or prefer not to use your phone for this purpose, other options are available.
If you are having issues using the Duo Mobile app, please contact the ITS Service Desk.
